Ahmad Nizam Abbas is a lawyer at Straits Law LLC, active in family and criminal law and has represented accused persons facing the death penalty. He has handled various disputes involving cross-border and inter-religious marriages. From 1996 to 2000, he sat on the Council of the Law Society of Singapore from 1996 to 2000. He is the current Chairman of the Muslim Law Practice Committee and has also served as Vice-Chairman of the Law Awareness Committee. In 1998, he represented the Law Society at the Parliamentary Select Committee Hearing on the amendments to the Administration of Muslim Law Act. He sits on the Panel of Advisers to the Juvenile Court and is an Associate Mediator under the Singapore Mediation Centre's Family Law Mediation Scheme.

He is active in the social service sector, and aside from having being Chairman of TRANS Centre (Temasek Reachout and Neighbourhood Scheme), he has served on the executive management committees of a Buddhist organisation Sunlife Youth Development Centre and Pertapis. Between 2000 and 2004, he sat on the Medifund Committee of the National Cancer Centre. Since 2001, he has served as a Councillor of Central Singapore CDC.

He is a Council member of statutory board MUIS (Islamic Authority of Singapore), and was President of Mendaki Club and on the Board of Directors of Yayasan Mendaki between 2003 and 2005. He also sits on the Board of Governors of the Nanyang Polytechnic. He was a member of the Board of the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) from 2002 to 2005.

He chaired the Community Development Group of the Feedback Unit from 2002 to 2005 and since April 2005, sits on the Feedback Unit ( now REACH ) Supervisory Panel. As a Council member of the National Youth Council from 2003 to 2007, he chaired the National Youth Forum Advisory Panel.

Mr Ahmad Nizam has a keen interest in the arts and entertainment industry and sits in both the English and Malay Programme Advisory Committees of the Media Development Authority.

He is married with 3 children and is a lifelong supporter of Arsenal football club.
